BNA - Guild NewsNov. 24, 2003 More RIFs Hit BNA The layoffs continue at BNA and the Guild is moving to help those who are losing their jobs with education aid and job training. In the last couple of months, BNA has cut about a dozen jobs. The most recent cuts came in TM and Rockville. BNA notified the Guild it is cutting an editor’s job in TM and two positions in Rockville. In addition to making sure each RIF is justified, the Guild has been making sure BNA obeys the pertinent contract provisions and is working with BNA to reduce the number of employees who have to leave involuntarily. That work appears to be paying off After many meetings with management, including a meeting between Guild Chair Reza Namdar, Vice Chair Gwen Holmes and Paul Wojcik, some progress was made. As a result of the meetings, the number of production department RIFs was reduced from nine to eight, and no one was forced to leave involuntarily. Meanwhile, with the help of the DC Metropolitan AFL-CIO, the Guild is working to assure that those who do have to leave have a smooth transition. Representatives of the Metro AFL came to BNA Nov. 13th to tell Guild members about the services they can provide to laid off workers. Services include helping write resumes, financial counseling and aid, help dealing with creditors and navigating the DC unemployment system. Under certain conditions, laid-off workers can receive thousands of dollars in educational aid. For more
