Bureau of National Affairs - Guild NewsFeb. 13, 2004 PAY RAISES COMING 2004
Pay Raises Start on Feb. 29 Feb. 29 marks the start of the second year of our three-year contract with BNA. It also ends the phase-in period for the "band" pay system inaugurated last March. That means all employees now will get a single pay raise each year. Previously, those at the top of the "steps" got one pay raise -- the negotiated general increase each year. Those on the steps got a step increase (presuming a satisfactory evaluation) and the annual general increase, or two separate raises. Anyone who was Step 6 or above as of March 1, 2003 will get his or her increase effective Feb. 29. Everyone else - those who got the two-part phase-in increase in the last 12 months - will get his or her increase on the anniversary of their hire date (unless it was changed due to a promotion, in which case the promotion date becomes the pay anniversary date). Now that the complicated part is out of the way (if you have questions contact your steward, Guild officer or the Local), here's the good part: Pay raises will range from 2.25% (Band D) to 6% (Band A). All Guild-covered employees will get pay raises this year that outpace the current rate of inflation (for the 12 months ending in December, the Consumer Price Index rose 1.9%). Those lowest in the bands will get raises more than triple the current inflation rate. The percentage increases were intended to mirror the old "step" pay system, which also provided bigger increases for those lower in the scale. These pay raises come to you because of hard bargaining last year and during previous contract negotiations. If you're already a Guild member, thanks for your support. If you aren't yet in the Guild, perhaps this would be a good time to consider joining. |
