Radio Free Asia Employees Vote For Union

Some 125 employees of Radio Free Asia (RFA) have voted 77-37 for representation by the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild, Communications Workers of America Local 32035.

The Language Service employees include broadcasters, researchers and production assistants at RFA’s headquarters in downtown Washington. U.S. government-funded RFA broadcasts news that is either not available or is government-censored to the people of China, North Korea, Tibet, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Burma.

After a large majority of RFA employees had signed a “mission statement” favoring union representation, The Newspaper Guild on April 4th petitioned the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for an election. The NLRB-supervised election was conducted May 28, but the board did not count the votes until today in order to allow ample time for three RFA employees stationed abroad to receive and return their ballots.

Management actively opposed the unionization effort, which began last fall when RFA employees contacted The Newspaper Guild-CWA.

The employees’ mission statement seeking union representation said that “we hope to create a more harmonious and healthy environment within RFA, both between the management and workers and among workers ourselves.” Goals listed in the statement included “job security, fairness, competitive wages and benefits, and a channel to express employees’ grievances.”

“Now that a strong majority of RFA employees have voted for a voice in their workplace, we hope soon to begin contract negotiations with management. We hope management will work with us for fairness, equity and a better working environment as we pursue our common mission of broadcasting news and information to countries where democracy and human rights are lacking,” said Liu Hong of RFA’s Cantonese language service.
