Son Of BNA Guild Member Wins Union Plus Scholarship -- Congrats Dan Toal!

Congratulations to Bureau of National Affairs (BNA) Guild member Steven Toal's son Daniel, who has won a Union Plus Scholarship for the 2004 school year! Daniel maintained a 4.02 GPA (weighted for honors and advanced placement courses) in high school, and will attend the University of Maryland in the fall, where he plans to pursue a career in mechanical engineering.

While he has not been involved in union activities, Daniel emphasized in his application that he understands their value. "Unlike millions of children around the world, I am not forced to work as a matter of survival. I have adequate food, clothing, shelter and medical care. My relationship to unions, organized labor, and the labor movement is one of gratitude, respect and appreciation, because I know that all of it is the legacy of organized labor. I pledge to continue in this tradition, at a time when international trade policy will not ensure environmental protection, child protection, workplace safety, wage and hour standards and the right to organize and collectively bargain."

The Union Plus Scholarship program has awarded nearly $2 million to union members or members of their families since 1992. Apllications for the 2005 awards will be available September 2004. To download the application from the Union Privilege website at that time, visit www.unionplus.org/scholarships.
