City-Wide Guild NewsMarch 7, 2005 Grand Prize Winners Named In Annual Front Page, Guild Service Awards Workers at the Baltimore Sun captured the two grand prizes proffered this year in the annual Front Page Awards judging conducted by the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild. Alec McGillis of the Sun won the Bill Pryor Memorial Grand Prize for Writing for "Poor Schools, Rich Targets." McGillis' work also won him a Front Page Award for Distinguished Public Service Reporting. John Makely of the Sun won the Bill Pryor Memorial Grand Prize for Photography for the body of work submitted in the competition, which was open to work published in 2004. Makely won the Front Page Award for Distinguished National News Photography and an honorable mention for Distinguished Sports Photography. All Front Page winners are to be honored at a reception Monday, March 28, at the AFL-CIO headquarters building, 815 16th St. NW in Washington. A reception begins at 6:30 p.m., with the awards being conferred at 7:15 p.m. Emcee for the evening will be Tom Sherwood of WRC (Channel 4) in Washington, a former Guild member at the Washington Post. In addition to Front Page Award winners, the evening will also recognize Guild Service Award winners as decided by members of the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild's Executive Council.At-large member Mark Gruenberg was declared winner of the Dan de Souza Memorial Award for Member of the year, Michelle Clements of United Food and Commercial Workers headquarters staff was named winner of the Nadine Grinder Memorial Award for Shop Steward of the Year, Marshall Brown of the Montgomery County Council of Supporting Services Employees was chosen Unit Officer of the Year, and Ann Marie Ditchey of the Post was picked as Customer Service Professional of the year. In addition, Radio Free Asia has been named Unit of the Year; RFA, which successfully concluded talks for its first contract last year, was judged to have made the most progress in meeting the "Build the Guild" goals set by the local. Judges of this year's Front Page competition chose not to confer a grand prize in design, although individual winners were selected in three design categories.
