Guild Unit Wins First Contract at United American Nurses

The 11-member Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild unit at United American Nurses has ratified its first contract, a nearly three-year agreement that runs through 2007.

United American Nurses until 2002 was a division of the American Nurses Association (ANA) WBNG has been representing about 120 employees at ANA headquarters since 2000.

The largest union for registered nurses in the United States, UAN represents more than 100,000 R.N.’s in private- and public-sector jobs. Under the contract that runs from March 24, 2005, through Dec. 31, 2007, the Guild represents UAN staff in organizing, research, communications, collective bargaining, and lobbying.

The Guild won voluntary recognition from UAN management early last year; bargaining began in November.

WBNG continues to represent more than 100 members working for UAN's parent organization, ANA.

WBNG Roster Expands by Two Units

Two Washington employers have signed recognition agreements that will add about two dozen WBNG members to the rolls.

Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Local 25 (UNITE HERE) management voluntarily recognized the Guild as the exclusive representative of non-supervisory employees of the local.

The 15-worker unit includes organizers, business agents, researchers, and support staff.

American Rights at Work, a nonprofit education and advocacy organization chaired by former Congressman David Bonior (D-MI), also recognized the Guild as the bargaining agent for a first contract.

The 7-worker unit comprises support staff, and communications, research, funding, and program-development professionals.
