Members Vote Against Renewing Administrative Officer's Contract

In the local-wide referendum, Guild members affirmed a decision by last year's Executive Council not to renew the contract of Dick Ramsey as the local's administrative officer.

On Oct. 26, 2000, the Executive Council decided, by a vote of 11 to 1, not to renew an employment agreement with Ramsey.

The council's decision meant that Ramsey was to complete the final three months of his contract as administrative officer, but that his employment with the Local would end Jan. 31, 2001, the expiration date of his contract.

On Nov. 29, 2000, Ramsey filed an appeal of that decision with the Council. After a further discussion with Dick at its December 18, 2000 meeting, the Council voted, 10-1-1, to deny the appeal.

On Dec. 26, 2000, a petition to hold a referendum on the issue was filed with the Local's Secretary. The referendum asked the general membership to overturn the decision of the Local Executive Council.

The motion read: "Shall the current contract of Administrative Officer Dick Ramsey be extended for one year through January 31, 2002?"

The referendum results were:

Yes (retain Ramsey) -- 299
No (do not retain Ramsey) -- 513
