Scholarships, Grants and Journalistic Competitions Available to Guild Members and Their Families Listed in order of application deadlines
The
Newspaper Guild (TNG) sponsors this competition to honor exceptional journalistic
effort -- in honor of The Newspaper
Guild's founding spirit and first president, Heywood Broun. The competition offers the following awards for the best entries

is open to high school and college journalists who have written on issues
of social justice. and is named after
a former Newspaper Guild general counsel and mentor.

scholarships -- ranging from $500 to $4,000 -- are awarded to members
of unions participating in any Union Plus program (this includes TNG-CWA
members), their spouses and their dependent children. Scholarships
may be used for study at an accredited college or university, community
college or recognized technical or trade school at the time the award

at the National Labor College/George Meany Center for Labor Studies. The

Joe Beirne Foundation also awards financial assistance in three other
general categories: Non-College
Tuition Aid and Scholarships -- For non-college bound
CWA members, their dependents, and dependents of retired members for
attendance at various kinds of technical institutes and community colleges.
Community
Service Training -- To foster the development of programs
to train CWA Local members in the principles of community and social services.
Individuals in these programs may work with or under the direction of
appropriate staff at CWA Headquarters and with a wide variety of community
organizations. Fellowships
and Internships -- Program support for CWA members, their dependents,
and dependents of retired members to gain practical experience
in working with social organizations or in administration or legislative
offices of government or at the state and city levels. There are
no application forms. The Foundation's Board of Directors has approved
a set of written guidelines to assist applicants in making their presentations. Special Note:
The Foundation does not make grants to individuals; grants
generally are made payable to tax-exempt organizations to simplify compliance
with the IRS laws and regulations.
The
prizes were established by the Schork family in honor of American journalist
Kurt Schork, who was killed in 2000 while on assignment for Reuters
in Sierra Leone. Award
