In July of 2002, reporters at the Lanham, Maryland-based Prince George’s Journal and at their sister paper, the Rockville-based Montgomery Journal, launched a drive to unionize their workplaces into units of the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild. But within a month, Journal publisher Ryan Phillips hired union-busting consultants to scare the employees and thwart their effort to unionize. In early December of 2002, publisher Phillips fired the entire Lanham news staff of The Prince George’s Journal and virtually all reporters at the Montgomery Journal. |

Since the Dec. 6 "Journal massacres", the dismissed employees and the Guild have filed legal challenges to publisher Phillips' blatant violation of labor law. Meanwhile, the staff-less Maryland newspapers are now produced in Virginia and have become mere shadows of their former selves, containing primarily wire service copy, warmed-over reprints and virutally none of the comprehensive local news subscribers expect.
