Washington Post - Guild NewsMay 24, 2004 Outsourcing
Hits Home Guild Assures Justice for Circulation Center Workers The Guild has won an important economic safety net for workers affected by The Post’s contracting out of DC jobs to Wisconsin. While The Post will, regrettably, move work out of the DC area in which it does business, current workers will be better protected economically. The Guild negotiated additional benefits for Circulation Service Center employees whose work and personal lives will be disrupted by Post management’s decision to outsource a large portion of that center’s calls to a LaCrosse, Wisconsin, company. Guild committee members Arlynne Goines, David Robie, Darlene Meyer, and Rick Ehrmann negotiated with Post management on May 5, 17, and 18 to reduce the negative effects of the Post’s decision. While The Post has promised that no employees will be laid off as a direct result of the outsourcing, employees were told by management that their shifts must change to begin later in the day. The in-house call center will now handle calls only from 2 pm until 8 pm, a time slot that Guild surveys showed would be tough for many employees to accommodate because of other obligations, such as dependent care and family needs. The Guild negotiating committee reached the following agreement with Post management:
The Guild’s bargaining resulted in a substantially better safety net than the one The Post management announced prematurely to employees on April 27. The existence of the Guild at the Post ensured that Call Center workers will receive some protection from the Post’s actions. However,
it is shameful that The Post would take away
from Washington the very work that supports
decent, stable jobs and a strong community.
The Guild will continue to fight outsourcing
of Guild work at The Post. Darlene Meyer and
