BARGAINING BULLETIN #3

After two more bargaining sessions, the Guild and RFA are on the verge of agreements that will establish a grievance and arbitration process for resolving disputes and strengthen our union at RFA.

On Wednesday, RFA indicated it was prepared to agree to a union security contract article assuring that all those who benefit from Guild representation will pay their fair share of the cost. RFA also has agreed to a dues checkoff plan which would allow members to have their union dues deducted from their checks.

"RFA's agreement to a fair share clause sends a strong and encouraging message that it intends to treat its employees and their union with respect," said Paul Reilly, the Guild's chief negotiator.

"We welcome this move and think it bodes well for the future relationship between the workers we represent and RFA," added Reilly.

The two sides also are near agreement on a proposal allowing RFA workers to do outside work as long as it's not a conflict of interest for the employee or RFA and doesn't compromise RFA's role as an international broadcaster.

Agreement is also close on another proposal assuring employees won't be pressured to distort the news.

RFA has proposed a no strike clause that would bar strikes during the term of the contract. The Guild told RFA it would respond to the proposal now that RFA has made a union security proposal.

The next bargaining session is Wednesday, November 5th.
