Company-Wide Ethics Policy Subject of Guild-Sun Negotiations

Sun's Opening Proposal Available on Guild Website:
http://www.wbng.org/sun/index.html/sun/index.html

We urge each of you to read the entire Sun proposal. Specific questions and comments may be directed to any member of the bargaining committee (listed on the back of this bulletin), or emailed to the Guild at Guildsun@verizon.net. Bargaining continues at least through September 24.

Ethical matters are of great import for any newspaper. The Guild favors development of ethics policies that adhere to the following basic principles, and we sincerely hope that this round of bargaining will result in an ethics policy that both The Sun and the Guild can agree upon.

The Guild believes the following principles are critical to an effective, fair ethics policy:

1. The importance of respect for employees' right to privacy and civic participation.

2. The realization that ethics arise from a set of values internalized, not imposed.

3. That policies addressing ethical conduct are not one-size-fits-all across a bargaining unit of news, commercial, and operational support employees, but should be focused and tailored.

4. That employees who report perceived ethical violations are to be protected from retaliation and adverse action.

5. That ongoing educational programs for all employees, including training for newly hired employees, jointly developed by The Sun and the Guild, are critical to building an ethical culture that protects the integrity and credibility of the Publisher, its publications and the rights of its employees.
