Guild Service Award
WBNG Unit Officer of the Year

Nomination Letter for Cheray Jones

March 26, 2009

On behalf of the WBNG-Association Staff Unit unit of the American Nurses Association, we would like to nominate Cheray Jones as the local's Unit Officer of the Year. Cheray has been an employee with ANA for 10-plus years and has served as a unit officer for the past four years.

Jones was nominated to serve as our Membership Liaison (formerly Treasurer), and later as Second Vice Chair for the Exempt Employees. As Vice Chair, she also serves as WBNG-ASU's Grievance Chair.

With her analytical background, Cheray always views the contract and the grievance process like a statistician. Breaking down the information as she perceives it and giving thorough attention to detail, she has been instrumental during negotiations on health insurance and in areas relating to performance measures.

As the Grievance Chair, she ensures that all 12 (contractual) stewards are well versed in the Weingarten Act, as well as in our step process for handling disputes.

Without her skills (and spreadsheets), our grievances would not proceed as smoothly as they have in the past three years. Cheray was quite green when she came into the leadership role for the staff union, but has been a quick study and is now the master at handling bargaining-unit matters.

One of Cheray's continuing success stories is how she is able to get managers in her shop area to advise grievants to seek her out when matters arise. She is my gentle soldier of fortune, and I could not be more happy knowing she is on our side of the table during negotiations.
