Pennsylvania Local Merges With WBNG
(Dec. 5, 2011) Under a merger agreement approved by the Washington Baltimore Newspaper Guild, Local 38218 of York, Penn., has become a WBNG "shop."
Liz Evans, president of the York Dispatch and Daily Record/Sunday News unit, told the six dozen members of the TNG local that the Dec. 3 vote in Washington means that the local headquartered about 100 miles away "will now take over a lot of the work that for years has been shouldered by a small number of union members here." The merger talks began early in 2011, and York TNG members had approved the merger in a vote in October.
Evans noted that members' monthly dues will not increase. "I encourage all of you to take a more active interest in your union," she e-mailed, "since without it we would all be getting paid about as much as our Evening Sun colleagues in Hanover."
Like the York papers, the Evening Sun is owed by MediaNews Group, whose chairman is William Dean Singleton.
